Tartan and grosgrain trousers

The Overcheck pattern is a great classic of country dressing in Britain and elsewhere. Its origins lie in tartan and tweed, two warm, hard-wearing fabrics designed for spending a lot of time outdoors. The addition of a coloured line above the tartan (overcheck) helped to distinguish the garments from a distance when hunting. We decided to make our trousers with an overcheck on a Black Watch base, with one red and one yellow line, woven in a thick flannel, softer than tweed. The cut of the trousers, with no darts and a high waist, is inspired by late 19th-century military uniforms, with a side stripe in red grosgrain.
We fully line the front and back of our winter trousers for three reasons: firstly, to ensure a nice, flowing, heavy fit; secondly, to stop the cold Highland winds brushing against your legs; and thirdly, to allow the trousers to slide easily over high socks when you stand up, without the wool clinging uncomfortably to your socks.
